I used to be an academic. My field is history of religions with an emphasis on esotericism. I also used to live in Istanbul and thought, mistakenly as it turned out, that I would live there forever. We found the most beautiful place in the world to live—Gateside Farm in Kilsyth—and now I am running around doing things in the garden, preparing a place for two geese and a dozen chickens to live (no, we haven’t gotten them yet), painting gazebos and garage doors, and only occasionally thinking about a scholarly article I could write. I usually wear Wellington boots. I am very old now but feel about 25. Things are very, very good.
