Karen-Claire's
Thoughts...
I
was absolutely thrilled to find my first piece of jasperware–a
small green Etruscan jug in a secondhand shop in Gourock. At that
point, I hadn’t realized green jasperware existed. Then
I found several more pieces. And just the other day, after Andy
realized I had been well and truly bitten by the Jasperware bug,
he took me to a little antique shop we know–where stuff
is piled up in heaps. Lo and behold, we found what we thought
was a Sheffield plated biscuit barrel, but on doing some research,
have decided that since there is no handle, it must be something
else. Ideas would be most appreciated.

I
am just now back from the post office where I sent off no less
then thirteen postal orders for still more pieces, including a
very "rare" black jasperware sugar bowl and a small
black and white jasperware tray.

Then
when I arrived back home I found that a package had arrived—six
green jasperware dishes, including a full so-called bridge set,
with a spade, club, heart and diamond. Bliss. Simply bliss.

A
few more thoughts about this current passion of mine. There's
something that actually pulled me toward Jasperware. It is difficult
to explain. I mean, I always knew about Wedgwood—which in
my mind has always been synonymous with Jasperware—to term
something Jasperware is a nuance I have only lately acquired—and
I always thought it was beautiful, but something now has pushed
me toward trying to acquire it. I don’t yet know what this
phenomenon means—yet—but it is there, and it is real.
I think that it will be extremely interesting to see where it
takes me.
The
scholar in me has resolved to do more digging to find out more
about the connections between Thomas Taylor and Josiah Wedgwood.
Yet another adventure . . . And that may well result in a publishable
article.
